The fjord, Milford Sound, or in Maaori, Piopiotahi, lies down on the south west part of the island. It has been judged the world´s top travel destination, that may be true, it may be an exaggeration, but one thing is certain, this deep bite into the side of New Zealand´s South Island is a truly beautiful and awe inspiring place. Milford Sound, with an annual rainfall of 6,813 mm on 182 days a year, is the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand – but, as the saying goes, “no pain, no gain”, and the pain of so much rain has created the gain of a lush, green vegetated landscape. The Sound runs 15 kilometers inland from the Tasman Sea at Dale Point.
